The Redmi Note series from Xiaomi is one of the most popular series that the Indian smartphone market leader has to offer. Every year, the Redmi Note series gets updated twice with new offerings and with one commonality — powerful specs and competitive price.
This year’s offering — Redmi Note 9 Pro — doesn’t seem any different. Touted as the ‘performance beast’ by Xiaomi, the handset packs impressive specs on paper — Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC, 48MP quad-camera setup, 5020mAh battery and more and the starting price of RS 13,999, makes it sound like a compelling deal. We used the smartphone to find out if it is actually that good or just too good to be true. Read on to find out more:

Design
With the Redmi Note 9 Pro, Xiaomi has introduced a couple of design variations that definitely make the handset stand apart from other Redmi smartphones. The first thing you notice on the device is the camera bump that is nothing but atypical. You get a centrally-placed quad-camera setup in a neat square design that is quite protruding. Just below the bump, you will see the LED flash in a separate black colour section that gives the illusion of the extended camera bump. Even though the camera bump on the Redmi Note 9 Pro is pretty extended, the placement or size of it is such that you don’t see it wobble when you place it on a flat surface, a problem that we have been consistently facing with Xiaomi devices.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro comes in three colour choices — Interstellar Black, Glacier White, and Aurora Blue — and we got the last one as our review unit. The back panel — prone to a lot of fingerprints — of the smartphone is plain yet flashy. Choose the Blue variant if you like slightly distinct handsets as the remaining two seem a bit more subtle.
Moving on to the front, the Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with a punch-hole notch in the centre. Right above the notch, you get an earpiece grille with the notification LED inside.
On the bottom edge of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, you get a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack and the speaker grille. The right edge of the device houses a SIM card tray. On the left side, you get the power button and the volume control keys. The power button houses the fingerprint sensor that definitely takes some getting used to as the placement does seem off initially.
Display
The Redmi Note 9 Pro offers a 6.67-inch full-HD+ display with 2400x1080p resolution and 450nit brightness. You get a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front for added protection and Xiaomi claims to have added an anti-oil and anti-fingerprint protective coating too.
When it comes to the display performance, there were a couple of issues we noticed with the device. Around the corners — especially when a White background is open such as in case of Chrome or Gmail — we saw a little colour bleeding that is hard to ignore once noticed. The notch also doesn’t do any good to the whole viewing experience as it seems to distract in most cases.
Under the Display Settings of the Redmi Note 9 Pro, you get a dedicated Reading mode, adjustable contrast levels, dark mode and choice of text size. The handset offers support for dark mode features that is much better to use.
Performance
As far as the hardware specs are concerned, Redmi Note 9 Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor with Adreno 618 GPU. Buyers get two options when it comes to storage. Those who want the base variant get 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage and for the power users, there is 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage model too. You also get support for a microSD card in the Redmi Note 9 Pro of up to 512GB so that solves the problem for all those who may feel that on-board storage is less.
In our time with the smartphone, it handled multitasking of random apps with no frame drops or heating issues. Both the call quality and audio quality are also satisfactory.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro offers facial unlock support as well as fingerprint lock support — both of which are fast to respond.
In terms of software, the Redmi Note 9 Pro runs MIUI 11 based on the Android 10 operating system. If you have been a Xiaomi user in the past, you will have no problems with the custom UI of the device and the bloatware and adware you get with it. You get abundant Mi apps that can neither be uninstalled or disabled so you will continue to receive notifications from them. For those who aren’t familiar with Xiaomi’s app mechanism and what all it brings, this can be a potential deal-breaker. Besides the Xiaomi apps, the handset comes preinstalled with third-party apps such as Facebook, Amazon, Paytm among others, which cannot even be uninstalled.
Camera
The Redmi Note 9 Pro comes with a 48MP primary rear camera with Samsung Isocell GM2 sensor. This is paired by an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, a 5MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor.
Xiaomi has again made use of the pixel binning technique with this device, which means that even though the primary camera is a 48MP sensor, the Redmi Note 9 Pro captures images in 12MP resolution by default and in order to take an image at 48MP resolution, you will have to manually enable the mode and good thing is that as soon as you open the camera app, you see it right on the screen with other modes including Night mode and video so it is not a cumbersome task to look for it in the settings.
When it comes to the image quality of the pictures captured by the Redmi Note 9 Pro, you will be able to capture images with details with slightly oversaturated colours in outdoor daylight conditions. For the price, the 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera also does a decent job. We were quite impressed with the camera performance of the 5MP macro camera results that are super detail-oriented. The quality of the portrait shots was found to be directly in sync with the lighting condition as better lit areas just delivered better portrait shots.
On the front, you will get a 16MP selfie camera on the Redmi Note 9 Pro if you like your images slightly processed and fixed by AI.
Battery
The Redmi Note 9 Pro comes backed by a 5020mAh battery. In our day-to-day activities, the Redmi Note 9 Pro lasted us almost a day when used for routine tasks such as calling, internet browsing as well as GPS tracking, watching online videos and more.
The device even comes with support for fast charging and packs an 18W fast charger inside the box. This is one of the major pluses of the device.
Verdict
Priced at Rs 13,999, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro certainly checks most of the boxes. You get a good-looking smartphone, reasonably good viewing experience and solid performance. It has a mid-range processor, 48MP camera, lasting battery — all elements to make sure that you don’t face any issues in everyday usage. We do feel that the software can be one sore point for some users, especially those who are not used to Xiaomi’s MIUI.
Among competition, you can consider Realme 6 that also comes at the same starting price.
